Why study mathematics?

Students who study mathematics will develop the necessary problem-solving skills for successful careers in the digital age, which has created the need for a mathematically literate workforce.

  • Highly qualified faculty teach classes in advanced mathematics topics and maintain a focus on research and personalized courses of study.
  • Students have all-day access to the Mathematics Learning Lab, which has wall-to-wall chalkboards and write-on glass — adjacent to professors' offices.
  • Students have access to math programs and databases like MathSciNet and Maple.

Six À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ students have been awarded Fred C. and J. Marie Christopherson Scholarships for the 2026-26 academic year. The recipients of the Fred C. and J. Marie Christopherson Scholarship are recognized as students who are committed to the university, respected by their peers, have a strong work ethic and a solid character.

The Math & Statistics Skills Center at À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ opened to students in Fall 2024 — a response to what faculty were witnessing among students in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the center has become popular among students with a variety of different majors — taking advantage of its resources, community and vibe.

À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ has been awarded approximately $45,000 per year through 2028 to support key initiatives designed to inspire youth education in STEM-related fields in South Dakota.
